Build your online store and become social media savvy.
With everything that’s going on in the world right now, so many shops have had to close their doors. As heartbreaking as this is, we should not let it mean that our business stops. Utilizing the online world (which many of us have flocked to for entertainment) means that we still have the ability to target potential customers and keep our ‘online doors’ open.
Below are 5 tips to help you get started with your new online business.
1 -- Build your online store.
There are tons of websites nowadays to build your online store. There’s website builder sites such as Wix, in which you can easily create designs from a template but drag-and-drop features to make sure it’s customized for your business. Other options include Weebly & Squarespace. If building it from a basic template is too time consuming, sites like Wordpress let you import a purchased template that you can find online.
The good thing about easy sites like Wix, is that they allow you to create a domain (your site’s URL), build a website, and host it all from their own service. If choosing other sites, make sure to have your own domain (can purchase from GoDaddy) and hosting service, such as BlueHost.
2 -- Use clear & bright product photos.
Many vendors will let you use their product photos for your own use (such as us!), so make sure to ask them for high resolution images. At the very minimum, you should have three photos per style: a front, side, and back.
If your vendors don’t offer product photos, snap some of your own! Use a relatable model that your target market can resonate with. If you’re having trouble with that, crop the photos so only the torso is shown. Another creative way to take photos is by putting them up on a wall with a hanger. It’s a clean and straightforward way to get simplistic but relatable photos.
Make sure you have good lighting (take outside for the most even light), a good camera such as a DSLR (with the camera quality nowadays, your cellphone will do just fine!), and a solid background to make the clothes stand out.
3 -- Get on social media.
If you aren’t already, make sure to join social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to market to your customers. Post things like new product arrivals and even host live shows to sell your products. Social media lets you be personable to your customers while keeping them up-to-date and selling them products.
4 -- Know who your target market is.
This should go without saying, but knowing who your target market is crucial to running a successful online business. It’s important to cater marketing materials so that they have the most impact on your customers. It would be a waste of time to create content that your customers don’t care for.
This tip also includes making sure your products are what your customers want, not just particular styles you like. Since you will be showing them online instead of in store, customers need to be able to gauge what the product will look like and feel like. Have all of the necessary information listed, include product photos of different angles, and find styles that your customers won’t hesitate to buy.
However, if you’re passionate about a style that you love but are unsure how your customers will feel, try it anyway! Being passionate is the time when you can sell the most products; a relatable, excited speech will get your customers on board with what you’re selling.
5 -- Stay active & update content often.
Our last tip is to make sure you stay active online. Post social media content daily, host live shows weekly, and promote product launches whenever new merchandise comes in. Even updating your website’s homepage or Facebook banner goes a long way in terms of connecting to your market. Being active will keep customers engaged and new content will keep them interested enough to keep coming back for more.
